19. Use of external lighting devices
| 19.1. | During darkness and in conditions of insufficient visibility, regardless of the degree of road illumination, as well as in tunnels, the following lighting devices must be switched on on a moving vehicle: a) on all mechanical vehicles - dipped (main) beam headlights; b) on mopeds (bicycles) and horse-drawn carts (sleighs) - headlights or lamps; c) on trailers and towed vehicles - position lamps. Note No. 1. In conditions of insufficient visibility, on mechanical vehicles it is permitted to switch on front fog lamps instead of dipped (main) beam headlights. |
|---|---|
| 19.2. | Main beam headlights must be switched to dipped beam at least 250 m before an oncoming vehicle, and also when they may dazzle other drivers, in particular those moving in the same direction. The lights must also be switched at a greater distance if the driver of the oncoming vehicle indicates this need by periodically switching the headlights. |
| 19.3. | If visibility in the direction of movement deteriorates due to the headlights of oncoming vehicles, the driver must reduce speed to one that does not exceed a safe speed under the conditions of actual road visibility in the direction of movement, and in case of dazzling - stop without changing lanes and switch on the hazard warning lights. Resuming movement is permitted only after the negative effects of dazzling have passed. |
| 19.4. | When stopping on a road during darkness and in conditions of insufficient visibility, the vehicle must have its position or parking lamps switched on, and in case of a forced stop, hazard warning lights must additionally be switched on. In conditions of insufficient visibility, it is permitted to additionally switch on dipped beam or front fog lamps and rear fog lamps. If the position lamps are faulty, the vehicle should be removed off the road, and if this is impossible, it must be marked in accordance with the requirements of paragraphs 9.10 and 9.11 of these Rules. |
| 19.5. | Front fog lamps may be used in conditions of insufficient visibility either separately or together with dipped or main beam headlights, and during darkness on unlit road sections - only together with dipped or main beam headlights. |
| 19.6. | A spotlight and searchlight may be used only by drivers of emergency vehicles while performing official duties, provided measures are taken not to dazzle other road users. |
| 19.7. | It is prohibited to connect rear fog lamps to brake signals. |
| 19.8. | The road train sign installed in accordance with subparagraph "a" of paragraph 30.3 of these Rules must be constantly switched on while moving, and during darkness or in conditions of insufficient visibility, also during a forced stop, stop, or parking on the road. |
| 19.9. | A rear fog lamp may be used exclusively in conditions of insufficient visibility both in daylight and during darkness. |
