17.3. Along which trajectory must the driver of the white car proceed?
UAПо якій траєкторії повинен рухатися водій білого автомобіля?
This exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine tests the ability to safely make a right turn in urban conditions when there is a designated lane for route vehicles nearby. Such situations often cause mistakes on the theoretical exam because drivers confuse the prohibition of driving in the route vehicle lane with the permission to briefly use it for a maneuver, if this is directly provided for by the traffic rules, signs, and markings.
The task belongs to the topic "Starting movement and maneuvering" and the section on the movement of route vehicles: the requirements of clause 10.5 apply (right turns are made from the farthest right position and exit closer to the right edge) and clause 17.2 (it is allowed to make a right turn from the route vehicle lane if it is separated by a broken line). Additionally, we refer to sign 5.11 "Lane for route vehicles" and the markings, which confirm: the right lane is special, but at the place with a broken separation, entry for turning is allowed.
If trajectory A is chosen, the driver actually turns not from the farthest right position and "cuts" the turn, which contradicts the logic of clause 10.5 and ignores the permitted procedure for performing the maneuver through the route vehicle lane. Trajectory B complies with the requirements of the Traffic Rules: the driver may briefly occupy the route vehicle lane through the broken line, make a right turn from the farthest right position, and then not continue driving in this lane where its border becomes solid. This understanding of signs, markings, and clauses 10.5 and 17.2 is most often tested in the theoretical exam.
Clause 10.5
"A turn must be made in such a way that when exiting the intersection of carriageways, the vehicle does not end up in the oncoming traffic lane, and when turning right, one should move closer to the right edge of the carriageway. Exiting an intersection where a roundabout is organized may be carried out from any lane, provided the direction of movement is not determined by road signs or markings and this does not create obstacles for vehicles moving in the same direction to the right."
Application to the task: when turning right, the driver must make the turn from the rightmost position and exit to the right edge/right lane, without "cutting" the trajectory.
Clause 17.2
"A driver turning right on a road with a lane for route vehicles, separated by a broken line of road marking, may make the turn from this lane. In such places, it is also allowed to enter this lane when entering the road and for boarding or alighting passengers near the right edge of the carriageway."
Application to the task: if the route vehicle lane is separated by a broken line, the driver has the right to occupy it to make a right turn (and must make the turn from it), adhering to the requirement of the "rightmost" position.
Clause 33.5 — 33 "Road Signs", 5 "Information and Direction Signs", sign 5.11 "Lane for Route Vehicles"
"Sign 5.11 'Lane for Route Vehicles' is used to designate a lane intended only for vehicles operating on established routes, if movement in this lane is in the same direction as the general traffic flow. The sign applies to the lane above which it is installed. If the sign is installed to the right of the road, it applies to the rightmost lane. A driver turning right on a road with a lane for route vehicles, separated by a broken line of road marking, may make the turn from this lane. In such places, it is also allowed to enter this lane when entering the road and for boarding or alighting passengers near the right edge of the carriageway."
Application to the task: the sign confirms that the far right lane is a route vehicle lane, and also directly provides for the possibility of making a right turn from it if it is separated by a broken line.
Clause 34.1 — 34 "Road Marking", 1 "Horizontal Marking", marking 1.24 "A"
"Marking 1.24 'A' designates a lane intended only for route vehicles. A driver turning right on a road with a lane for route vehicles, separated by a broken line of road marking, may make the turn from this lane. In such places, it is also allowed to enter this lane when entering the road and for boarding or alighting passengers near the right edge of the carriageway."
Application to the task: duplicates the regime of the lane (only for route vehicles), but at the same time confirms the exception for other vehicles when making a right turn if there is a broken line.
Clause 34.1 — 34 "Road Marking", 1 "Horizontal Marking", marking 1.2 (wide solid line)
"Marking 1.2 (wide solid line) marks the edge of the carriageway on motorways or the boundaries of the lane for route vehicles. In places where other vehicles are allowed to enter the route vehicle lane, this line may be broken. Line 1.2, which marks the boundaries of the lane for route vehicles, is yellow. The line may be crossed in case of a forced stop if it marks the edge of the carriageway adjacent to the shoulder."
Application to the task: the key point is that the boundary of the route vehicle lane may be broken precisely where other vehicles are allowed to enter (in particular, to make a right turn), so the driver has the right to temporarily occupy this lane for the maneuver.
Thus, the correct answer is "Along trajectory B.", given that according to the Traffic Rules, a right turn should be made from the rightmost position (clause 10.5), and if there is a route vehicle lane separated by a broken line, it is allowed to make a right turn from this lane (clause 17.2), which is confirmed by sign 5.11 and markings 1.24/1.2.
As the driver approaches the intersection, they see that a lane for route vehicles is organized on the right. This is confirmed by an informational sign indicating such a lane and road markings with the letter "A," and the boundary of this lane is separated by a yellow dashed line 1.2, which in this place is broken. That is, before turning right, an ordinary car is allowed to briefly enter this lane specifically to perform the maneuver.
Next, we apply the requirement of point 10.5 of the Traffic Rules: when turning right, the driver must move as close as possible to the right edge of the carriageway and not enter the oncoming lane. In this situation, the "right edge" actually passes along the route vehicle lane, since it is the farthest right lane in the same direction.
Point 17.2 of the Traffic Rules directly allows a driver turning right to make the turn from the route vehicle lane, provided that it is separated by a dashed line. This is exactly what is shown in the diagram: the dashed boundary means that entering the lane is allowed for turning, but not for traveling a long distance in it.
If trajectory A is chosen, the driver actually turns not from the farthest right position and does not end up in the nearest right lane after the turn, which contradicts the logic of point 10.5. Instead, trajectory B shows the correct actions: before the maneuver, the driver takes the farthest right position (it is allowed to enter the route vehicle lane through the dashed marking), and the turn itself is made to the right without unnecessary "cutting" and in compliance with the requirement to keep to the right edge.
After the turn, the driver should not continue moving in the route vehicle lane: it should be left as soon as the markings allow, and not entered where the dashed line turns into a solid one.
Therefore, the correct answer is "Along trajectory B," since turning right is allowed from the route vehicle lane separated by a dashed line, and it is necessary to keep as close as possible to the right edge in accordance with points 17.2 and 10.5 of the Traffic Rules.
