17.2. Along which trajectory is the driver of the blue vehicle permitted to turn right?
UAПо якій траєкторії водієві синього автомобіля дозволено поворот праворуч?
This is an exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine about the safe execution of a right turn at an intersection and interaction with a dedicated lane for route vehicles. In real traffic, this situation occurs frequently: incorrect lane choice or a "wide" turn not from the far right position creates conflicts with vehicles on the right, increases the risk of accidents, and is a common mistake in the theoretical exam.
The question tests knowledge of the section of the Traffic Rules regarding maneuvering (p. 10.4) and special requirements for the route vehicle lane (p. 17.2), as well as understanding of the effect of informational and direction signs and horizontal markings. The key principle is as follows: before turning right, the driver must take the far right position on the roadway in advance. If there is a route vehicle lane on the right and it is separated by a broken line before the intersection, the traffic rules allow briefly entering this lane specifically to make a right turn, without obstructing buses.
In the case of trajectory A, the maneuver actually starts not from the far right position, as there is still another lane to the right, so this contradicts the requirements of p. 10.4 and is dangerous due to the possible "crossing" of paths with those moving further right. Trajectory B corresponds to the logic of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine: the driver takes the maximum right position, using the route vehicle lane in the permitted place (broken separation), and makes the turn correctly. That is why the combination "A and B" is also not suitable: the only correct option is the one that ensures a turn from the far right lane in accordance with the traffic rules.
Clause 10.4
“Before turning right or left, including in the direction of the main road, or making a U-turn, the driver must in advance take the appropriate extreme position on the carriageway designated for movement in that direction, except in cases when the turn is made when entering an intersection with organized roundabout traffic, the direction of movement is determined by road signs or road markings, or movement is possible only in one direction established by the configuration of the carriageway, road signs, or markings. A driver making a left turn or U-turn outside an intersection from the corresponding extreme position on the carriageway for that direction must give way to oncoming vehicles, and if performing these maneuvers not from the extreme left position on the carriageway — also to passing vehicles. A driver making a left turn must give way to passing vehicles ahead that are making a U-turn. If there is a tram track in the middle of the carriageway, a driver of a non-rail vehicle making a left turn or U-turn outside an intersection must give way to the tram.”
Application to the task: the right turn must be made from the corresponding extreme right position (and not from the “second from the right” lane), unless otherwise specified by signs/markings or special rules.
Clause 17.2
“A driver turning right on a road with a lane for route vehicles separated by a broken road marking line may make the turn from this lane. In such places, it is also allowed to enter this lane when entering the road and for boarding or alighting passengers near the right edge of the carriageway.”
Application to the task: if the route vehicle lane before the intersection is separated specifically by a broken line, the driver has the right to occupy it and make a right turn from this lane.
Clause 1.10 (term “Extreme position on the carriageway”)
“Extreme position on the carriageway — the position of a vehicle at a distance from the edge of the carriageway (the center of the carriageway or the dividing strip) that does not allow another passing vehicle (including a two-wheeled one) to move even closer to the edge of the carriageway (the center of the carriageway or the dividing strip).”
Application to the task: the trajectory for a right turn should begin from the “extreme” right position, which in this situation is achieved by entering the route vehicle lane in the place where it is permitted by the markings.
Clause 33.5.11 — 33 “Road signs”, 5 “Information and direction signs”, sign 5.11 “Lane for route vehicles”
“Sign 5.11 ‘Lane for route vehicles’ is used to designate a lane intended only for vehicles operating on established routes, if movement in such a lane is in the same direction as the general traffic flow. The sign applies to the lane above which it is installed. If the sign is installed to the right of the road, it applies to the rightmost lane. A driver turning right on a road with a lane for route vehicles separated by a broken road marking line may make the turn from this lane. In such places, it is also allowed to enter this lane when entering the road and for boarding or alighting passengers near the right edge of the carriageway.”
Application to the task: the sign designates the right lane as a route vehicle lane, but at the same time directly allows a right turn from it if it is separated by a broken line.
Clause 34.1.24 — 34 “Road markings”, 1 “Horizontal markings”, marking 1.24 “A”
“Marking 1.24 ‘A’ designates a lane intended only for route vehicles. A driver turning right on a road with a lane for route vehicles separated by a broken road marking line may make the turn from this lane. In such places, it is also allowed to enter this lane when entering the road and for boarding or alighting passengers near the right edge of the carriageway.”
Application to the task: confirms that the right lane is for route vehicles, and duplicates the condition when it is allowed to enter it and turn right from it.
Clause 34.1.10.1 — 34 “Road markings”, 1 “Horizontal markings”, marking 1.10.1
“Marking 1.10.1 indicates places where parking is prohibited. It is used independently or in combination with sign 3.35 ‘Parking prohibited’ and is applied near the edge of the carriageway or on top of the curb.”
Application to the task: does not determine the trajectory of the turn, but is background information about parking restrictions in the area shown in the diagram.
Thus, the correct answer is “Along trajectory B.”, given that according to the definition in the Traffic Rules, a right turn is made from the extreme right position (clause 10.4), and if there is a route vehicle lane separated by a broken line, it is allowed to occupy this lane and make the turn from it (clause 17.2; sign 5.11 and marking 1.24 ‘A’).
In the diagram, the blue car is approaching an intersection, and to its right there is a lane designated for route vehicles (this is indicated by the road sign and the markings showing a "bus" lane). An ordinary driver cannot drive in this lane continuously, but the rules provide an exception specifically for making a right turn.
According to point 10.4 of the Traffic Rules, before turning right, the driver must take the far right position on the carriageway in the lane from which movement in the desired direction is permitted. That is, the turn itself must be made as close to the right edge as possible, so as not to create danger and not to "cut" across the trajectories of other road users.
Next, we take into account point 17.2 of the Traffic Rules: if the lane for route vehicles is separated by a broken line marking, the driver is allowed to enter this lane specifically for making a right turn (and to turn from it). In the illustration, before the intersection, the boundary of this lane becomes a broken line, so it is allowed to cross it at this point and to take the far right position already in the "bus" lane, without interfering with route vehicles.
If trajectory A is chosen, the turn is actually made not from the far right position: the car remains to the left, and there is still a lane to its right. This contradicts the requirement of point 10.4 and creates a dangerous situation, as the turning trajectory becomes "wide" and may conflict with traffic on the right.
Trajectory B meets both requirements: the driver enters the lane separated by a broken line and makes the turn from the far right position, as required by the rules.
Therefore, the correct answer is "Along trajectory B," since before turning you must take the far right position (p. 10.4), and if there is a broken separation of the route vehicle lane, you are allowed to enter it and make a right turn from it (p. 17.2).
