This exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine tests knowledge of safely passing uncontrolled intersections, where there is no traffic light or traffic controller, and the order of movement is determined by priority signs and general traffic rules. In real conditions, it is at such intersections that conflict situations most often arise due to incorrect determination of the main/secondary road and ignoring the tram's right of way, so the topic directly affects safety and successful completion of the theoretical exam.

The question belongs to Section 16 of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine "Passing intersections" and additionally checks understanding of priority signs (sign 2.1 "Yield") and plate 7.8 "Direction of the main road." Since the main road at the intersection changes direction, vehicles on the main road pass each other as at an equivalent intersection according to the "obstacle on the right" principle (clause 16.14). And a driver approaching from the secondary road is obliged to yield to everyone moving on the main road (clause 16.11).

The analysis of answer options comes down to the correct priority: the option "first" is incorrect, because sign 2.1 clearly requires yielding to vehicles on the main road. The option "last" is also incorrect, because after vehicles on the main road have passed, the tram at an uncontrolled intersection has priority over non-rail vehicles approaching on an equivalent road (clause 16.12), but this does not mean that our car must yield to absolutely everyone without exception. That is why the correct option is where our passage occurs after vehicles on the main road and after the tram: this fulfills the requirement to "yield" (16.11), the rule for passing on the main road when its direction changes (16.14), and the priority of rail transport (16.12).

Clause 16.11

At an intersection of roads with different priorities, the driver of a vehicle moving on a secondary road must yield to vehicles approaching this intersection on the main road, regardless of their further direction of movement.

Application: in this task, our car is approaching from a secondary road (sign 2.1), so it is required to yield to all vehicles moving on the main road (the yellow and purple cars).

Clause 16.14

If the main road at the intersection changes direction, drivers of vehicles moving on it must follow the rules for passing intersections of roads with equal priority between themselves. This rule must also be followed by drivers moving on secondary roads between themselves.

Application: the direction of the main road at the intersection changes (this is indicated by plate 7.8), so vehicles moving on the main road pass each other according to the rules of an "equal priority intersection" (the "give way to the right" principle) — thus, the yellow car goes first, then the purple.

Clause 16.12

At an intersection of roads with equal priority, the driver of a non-rail vehicle must yield to vehicles approaching from the right, except at intersections with organized circular traffic. This rule must also be followed by tram drivers between themselves. At any uncontrolled intersection, a tram, regardless of its further direction, has priority over non-rail vehicles approaching it on an equal priority road, except at intersections with organized circular traffic.

Application: after the vehicles on the main road (yellow and purple) have passed, on the secondary road, the tram and non-rail vehicles pass each other; at an uncontrolled intersection, the tram has priority over non-rail vehicles approaching on an equal priority road — therefore, the tram goes before our car.

Clause 33.2 — 33 "Road Signs", 2 "Priority Signs", sign 2.1 "Yield"

Sign 2.1 "Yield" requires the driver to yield to vehicles moving on the road they are crossing or entering.

Application: sign 2.1 indicates that for us the road is secondary, so we do not have the right to pass first relative to vehicles on the main road.

Clause 33.7 — 33 "Road Signs", 7 "Plates to Road Signs", plate 7.8 "Direction of Main Road"

Plate 7.8 "Direction of Main Road" shows the direction of the main road at the intersection.

Application: this particular plate allows us to determine which approaches are main/secondary and that the main road at the intersection changes direction, so clause 16.14 applies between vehicles on the main road.

That is, the correct answer is "After the yellow and purple cars, and the tram.", given that according to the definition of the Traffic Rules, priority is first given to vehicles moving on the main road (clause 16.11, sign 2.1 and plate 7.8), then the order on the main road is determined as at an equal priority intersection if the main road changes direction (clause 16.14), and then the tram has priority over non-rail vehicles at an uncontrolled intersection with equal priority (clause 16.12).

In front of us is an uncontrolled intersection: there is neither a traffic light nor a traffic controller, so the order of passage is determined by priority signs and the rules for passing uncontrolled intersections. For our direction, sign 2.1 "Yield" is installed together with a plate indicating the "Direction of the main road." This means we are approaching on a secondary road and are obliged to yield to vehicles moving on the main road.

Let's first deal with those traveling on the main road. Since the main road at this intersection changes direction, drivers on the main road pass each other as if this were an intersection of roads of equal importance (paragraph 16.14 of the Traffic Rules). That is, the "obstacle on the right" rule applies: the yellow car will go first (there is no obstacle on its right), and after it—the purple one, because after the yellow car moves, the purple car will no longer have an "obstacle on the right."

After the vehicles on the main road have passed, it is the turn of those on the secondary road. Here, it is important to consider the tram: at an uncontrolled intersection, it has priority over non-rail vehicles approaching it on a road of equal importance. In our situation, the tram has priority over both our car and the white car, so it will go before us.

Only after the tram can we proceed, and the white car will go last, because for it, we will be the "obstacle on the right," and it is obliged to yield to us according to the rule for passing between those remaining on the secondary road.

Thus, the correct answer is "After the yellow and purple cars and the tram," since we are on the secondary road (must yield to traffic on the main road), on the main road the order is determined by the "obstacle on the right" rule when the main road changes direction (p. 16.14), and among those remaining, the tram has priority over non-rail vehicles and passes before our car.
