This exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine tests the ability to safely and correctly determine the order of movement at intersections where there is no traffic light or traffic controller. Such situations are among the most common in the city, and a mistake with priority leads to conflicts and accidents, so for the theoretical exam it is important to learn to "read" priority signs and apply the traffic rules without prompts.
The task relates to the topic of passing uncontrolled intersections (section 16 of the Traffic Rules) and priority road signs. The key reference points here are sign 2.1 "Give Way" and plate 7.8 "Direction of the Main Road," which indicate who is on the main road and who is on the secondary, as well as that the main road at the intersection changes direction. According to clause 16.11, the driver on the secondary road must yield to vehicles approaching on the main road, regardless of where they are turning; and according to clause 16.14, those who are in equal conditions (on the main road among themselves or on the secondary road among themselves) pass as at an equivalent intersection, that is, taking into account the "right-hand rule" and the priority of the tram in the relevant conditions.
That is why the option where movement begins "after the tram, white and black cars" corresponds to the logic of the Traffic Rules: first, vehicles from the main road (tram and white car) pass, and only then those on the secondary road. Explanation of why other options are incorrect: the answer "after the tram" ignores the obligation to yield to all vehicles on the main road (clause 16.11), and the answer "first" contradicts the requirement of the "Give Way" sign and the rules on priority at uncontrolled intersections. In practice, this knowledge helps to quickly assess the intersection scheme, not to "guess" the order, and to avoid dangerous maneuvers during real driving.
Clause 16.11
At an intersection of roads of unequal importance, the driver of a vehicle moving on a secondary road must yield to vehicles approaching this intersection along the main road, regardless of the direction of their further movement.
Brief application: since your car is moving from a secondary road ("Yield" sign), you are obliged to let vehicles approaching on the main road (the tram and the white car) pass.
Clause 16.14
If the main road changes direction at the intersection, drivers of vehicles moving along it must follow the rules for passing intersections of roads of equal importance between themselves. This rule must also be followed by drivers moving on secondary roads between themselves.
Brief application: after the vehicles on the main road have passed, between the two vehicles on the secondary road (yours and the black car), the order is determined as at intersections of equal roads (using the "right-hand rule").
Clause 16.12
At an intersection of roads of equal importance, the driver of a non-rail vehicle must yield to vehicles approaching from the right, except at intersections with a roundabout. This rule must also be followed by tram drivers between themselves. At any uncontrolled intersection, a tram, regardless of the direction of its further movement, has priority over non-rail vehicles approaching it on a road of equal importance, except at intersections with a roundabout.
Brief application: the tram has priority over non-rail vehicles in the relevant conditions, and between your car and the black car on the secondary road, the "right-hand obstacle" rule applies (the black car is to your right — so you yield to it).
Clause 33.2 — 33 "Road Signs", 2 "Priority Signs", sign 2.1 "Yield"
The driver must yield to vehicles moving on the main road.
Brief application: this sign obliges you to yield to the tram and the white car, which are moving on the main road.
Clause 33.7 — 33 "Road Signs", 7 "Plates to Road Signs", plate 7.8 "Direction of the Main Road"
Indicates the direction of the main road at the intersection. Used with signs 2.1, 2.2, 2.3.
Brief application: this plate determines which approaches are main (tram and white car) and which are secondary (your and black cars), as well as that the main road changes direction at the intersection.
That is, the correct answer is "After the tram, white, and black cars.", given that according to the definition of the Traffic Rules, vehicles on the main road have priority over those coming from the secondary road (clause 16.11, sign 2.1 with plate 7.8), and between vehicles on the secondary road, the order is as at intersections of equal roads using the "right-hand rule" (clauses 16.14, 16.12).
In front of us is an uncontrolled intersection, and the order of movement at it is determined by priority signs. For our direction, there is a “Yield” sign with a “Main Road Direction” plate, so first we need to determine who is on the main road and who is on the secondary road.
According to the diagram on the plate, it is clear that the tram and the white car are approaching the intersection on the main road, while our car and the black car are moving on the secondary road. Therefore, according to clause 16.11 of the Traffic Rules, we are obliged to yield to all vehicles approaching on the main road, regardless of where they go next.
Next, we determine the order among those on the main road. Since the main road changes direction at this intersection, drivers on the main road must pass each other as at an intersection of equal roads (clause 16.14 of the Traffic Rules). In this situation, the tram has priority over non-rail vehicles, so the tram will go first, followed by the white car.
When the main road is clear, we move on to the vehicles on the secondary road: that is, our car and the black car. Among themselves, they also follow the rules as at an intersection of equal roads (clause 16.14 of the Traffic Rules), that is, the “give way to the right” principle applies. For us, the black car is on the right, so we must yield to it, and it will go third, and we will go last.
Therefore, the correct answer is “After the tram, the white car, and the black car,” since we are on the secondary road and according to clause 16.11 yield to vehicles on the main road, and among the cars on the secondary road, according to clause 16.14, the “give way to the right” rule applies, so the black car goes before us.
