How Traffic Light Standards Are Changing in Ukraine: Richer Green, New Design and Harmonization with Europe
In November 2024, Ukraine adopted a new edition of the state standard for traffic lights — DSTU 4092:2024, which came into effect on May 1, 2025. This marks one of the largest modernizations of traffic signaling in recent decades, aimed at harmonization with European standards and improving safety for all road users.
New colors and better visibility
One of the most noticeable updates will be a change in the shade of the green traffic light signal. Instead of traditional green, a more saturated, "deep" tone closer to emerald will be used. The new shade should provide better visibility in bright daylight, especially at large urban intersections and highways.
New arrow design and timers
The design of arrows on traffic lights will also be noticeably updated. Traditional straight arrows will give way to modern "chevron" forms — slightly curved and more dynamic. Another important innovation is the installation of timers (countdown displays) on traffic lights not only for cars but also for pedestrians and cyclists.
Cyclists will get their own standards
For the first time in the history of Ukrainian standards, requirements for cyclist traffic lights are detailed. Now the bicycle pictogram on the lens will be mandatory, and traffic light sizes will be regulated depending on their location: 100 mm if the device is installed beside the road, and 200 mm if it is located above the roadway.
Gradual implementation
Mass replacement of all existing traffic lights is not planned. New requirements will apply to devices that will be installed or updated as part of new projects and reconstructions. Thus, the transition to new standards will be gradual and economically justified.
Traffic light reform is part of the broader process of European harmonization of Ukrainian road standards. This aligns with other road infrastructure modernization initiatives, including traffic rules updates and electronic control systems implementation.
Improved signal visibility in challenging weather conditions will help reduce the risk of wrong decisions on the road. To prepare for changes in road infrastructure, drivers are recommended to familiarize themselves with current exam preparation methods and international road safety practices.
