33.4.26. In which direction are you permitted to proceed in the situation shown?

This examination question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine tests the ability to safely pass intersections and correctly interpret road signs that prescribe a mandatory direction of movement. Intersection — a place where roads cross, join, or branch at the same level, the boundary of which is the imaginary lines between the beginnings of the rounding of the edges of the carriageways of each road. Places where exits from adjacent areas join the road are not considered intersections.

It is also important to understand the area of effect of the sign. When sign 4.1 is installed before the intersection of carriageways, it "applies" specifically to this intersection and obliges the driver to choose the permitted direction of movement when passing through it. Therefore, in the situation shown, the only permissible direction for the driver to pass through the intersection is straight ahead.
Thus, the correct answer is "Straight ahead only," since sign 4.1 "Straight ahead only" is installed before the intersection, which for non-route vehicles allows crossing the intersection only in the straight-ahead direction.
