This examination question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine tests the ability to safely pass intersections and correctly interpret road signs that prescribe a mandatory direction of movement. Such situations are important for the theoretical exam, as mistakes in recognizing mandatory signs often lead to dangerous maneuvers and violations of traffic rules at intersections.

The question belongs to Section 33 of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine, "Road Signs," specifically to mandatory signs (item 33.4), and concerns sign 4.1 "Straight Ahead Only." When this sign is installed before the intersection of carriageways, it applies specifically to that intersection and obliges the driver to pass through it only in the straight direction. Left turns, right turns, and U-turns at such an intersection are prohibited for non-route vehicles; the only exception in the Traffic Rules concerns route vehicles, as well as a possible right turn into adjacent territory, but this is not considered passing through the intersection (the definitions of "intersection" and "adjacent territory" are given in item 1.10).

That is why the option that allows movement straight or to the right is incorrect in this situation: turning right at the intersection contradicts the requirement of sign 4.1. The correct option is the one that provides for only the straight direction, as it fully complies with the effect of the mandatory sign at the intersection and the logic of traffic organization, which is tested in theoretical exam tasks.

Clause 33.4 — 33 "Road signs", 4 "Mandatory signs", sign 4.1 "Straight ahead only"

Sign 4.1 "Straight ahead only" permits movement only straight ahead. The sign does not apply to vehicles operating on established routes. The sign applies to the intersection of carriageways before which it is installed, and if installed at the beginning of a road or after an intersection, it applies to the section of road up to the next intersection. The sign does not prohibit turning right into courtyards or other areas adjacent to the road.

Clause 1.10 (term "Intersection")

Intersection — a place where roads cross, join, or branch at the same level, the boundary of which is the imaginary lines between the beginnings of the rounding of the edges of the carriageways of each road. Places where exits from adjacent areas join the road are not considered intersections.

Clause 1.10 (term "Adjacent area")

Adjacent area — an area adjacent to the carriageway and not intended for through traffic of vehicles (courtyard areas, residential zones, parking lots, gas stations, enterprises, etc.).

Thus, the correct answer is "Only straight ahead.", considering that according to the definition in the Traffic Rules, sign 4.1 "Straight ahead only", installed before an intersection, requires movement only straight ahead at this intersection of carriageways (turns at the intersection are prohibited, except for the exception for route vehicles and turning right only into an adjacent area, which is not considered an intersection).

In this situation, the key element is the road sign installed before the intersection. This is the mandatory sign 4.1 "Straight ahead only" from section 33 of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine, and it determines which direction the driver must choose specifically at this intersection.

The meaning of this sign is simple: it allows movement only in the straight-ahead direction. That is, at the intersection where it is installed, the driver is prohibited from turning left or right and from making a U-turn. The only exception is for route vehicles, but for an ordinary car this exception does not apply.

It is also important to understand the area of effect of the sign. When sign 4.1 is installed before the intersection of carriageways, it "applies" specifically to this intersection and obliges the driver to choose the permitted direction of movement when passing through it. Therefore, in the situation shown, the only permissible direction for the driver to pass through the intersection is straight ahead.

Thus, the correct answer is "Straight ahead only," since sign 4.1 "Straight ahead only" is installed before the intersection, which for non-route vehicles allows crossing the intersection only in the straight-ahead direction.
