33.4.25. Are you allowed to turn left at the intersection in the situation shown?
UAЧи дозволено Вам повернути ліворуч у зображеній ситуації на перехресті?
This is an exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine about the safe passage of intersections and the correct interpretation of road signs in a situation where there are two separate crossings of carriageways at one intersection (typical for a road with a median strip). Such questions in the theoretical exam check whether the driver can distinguish between the concepts of an intersection and a crossing of carriageways, and whether they can correctly follow mandatory signs without mistakes that could lead to a conflict with oncoming traffic.
The content of the task is based on Section 33 of the Traffic Rules, mandatory signs, in particular sign 4.1 "Straight ahead only." The key feature: when sign 4.1 is installed before a crossing of carriageways, it requires you to go straight only at the nearest crossing where it is placed, not "at the entire intersection" in general. Therefore, turning left at the first crossing would violate the sign's requirement, but at the second crossing, the effect of this sign no longer applies, and a left turn is possible there if there are no other restrictions (road markings, additional signs, traffic signals, or a traffic controller).
If you analyze the answer options, the statement about a complete prohibition of the maneuver is incorrect, because sign 4.1 does not prohibit turns "in general" after passing its crossing. Allowing a turn into any of the carriageways is also incorrect, since at the first crossing the direct requirement to go straight applies. The option allowing only a turn into the first carriageway contradicts the mandatory sign. The only logically and normatively consistent conclusion for this exam question: a left turn is possible only into the second carriageway, since at that point the effect of sign 4.1, installed before the first crossing, no longer applies.
Clause 33.4 — 33 “Road signs”, 4 “Mandatory signs”, sign 4.1 “Straight ahead only”
“Sign 4.1 ‘Straight ahead only’ permits movement only straight ahead. The sign does not apply to vehicles operating on established routes. The sign applies to the intersection of carriageways before which it is installed, and if the sign is installed at the beginning of the road or after the intersection, its effect extends to the section of the road up to the nearest intersection. The sign does not prohibit turning right into courtyards or other areas adjacent to the road.”
Brief application to the question: since sign 4.1 is installed before the first intersection of carriageways at this intersection, it requires you to go straight only at the first “crossing” (left turn is prohibited there). The effect of this sign does not extend to the second intersection of carriageways, so a left turn is possible specifically at the second crossing (in the absence of other prohibitions/instructions).
Clause 1.10 (term “Intersection”)
Intersection — a place where roads cross, adjoin, or branch at the same level, the boundaries of which are imaginary lines between the beginnings of the rounding of the edges of the carriageways of each road.
Clause 1.10 (term “Carriageway”)
Carriageway — an element of the road intended for the movement of non-rail vehicles.
Thus, the correct answer is “Allowed only at the second crossing,” given that according to the definition in the Traffic Rules, sign 4.1 “Straight ahead only” applies only to the intersection of carriageways before which it is installed (left turn at the first is prohibited, at the second — not anymore).
In the depicted situation, a mandatory road sign 4.1 "Straight ahead only" (section 33 of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine) is installed in front of you. Its meaning is simple: where it applies, the driver is only allowed to go straight, without turning left or making a U-turn.
The key point in this task is that the intersection shows two separate crossings of carriageways (two "driveways"). For such mandatory signs, the Traffic Rules establish an important feature: if sign 4.1 is placed before the crossing of carriageways, it regulates traffic specifically at the nearest crossing where it is installed, and not automatically throughout the entire intersection with several carriageways.
Therefore, when you approach the first driveway, sign 4.1 requires you to pass through this crossing only straight ahead. This means that turning left into the first driveway is not allowed, as it would violate the requirement of the "straight ahead only" sign.
After passing the first crossing, you reach the second driveway. The effect of sign 4.1, installed before the first crossing, no longer applies to it. Therefore, at the second driveway, turning left becomes permitted (provided there are no other prohibitory signs, markings, or signals restricting the maneuver).
Thus, the correct answer is "Allowed only into the second driveway," since sign 4.1 "Straight ahead only" applies only to the first crossing of carriageways, prohibiting a left turn into the first driveway, but does not restrict a left turn into the second.
