30.2. Where should the identification sign 'Taxi' be placed on the vehicle?
UAДе на транспортному засобі повинен бути розпізнавальний знак «Таксі»?
This is an exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine concerning identification signs on vehicles and is directly related to safety and predictability in road traffic. Proper taxi marking helps passengers and other road users quickly identify a vehicle that is providing transportation, and allows surrounding drivers to better anticipate possible frequent stops for boarding and alighting.
The question tests knowledge of Section 30 of the Traffic Rules, specifically item 30.3 (n) regarding number plates and identification signs, inscriptions, and markings. The regulation explicitly defines the permissible locations for the "Taxi" sign: it may be installed on the roof or applied to the side surface of the body (according to the requirements for the appearance and number of "checkers"). Therefore, the option that combines both permitted methods meets the requirements of the Traffic Rules and is the one expected on the theoretical exam.
The analysis of the answer options is simple: a statement about only the roof is incomplete, as the traffic rules also allow application to the sides; a statement about only the side surface likewise limits the regulation, since the sign may also be on the roof. Only the option with the wording "on the roof or on the side surface" covers all legal options, so it is correct for this exam question.
Clause 30.3 (n) (section 30 "Number plates, identification marks, inscriptions and designations")
The following identification marks are installed on the respective vehicles: (n) "Taxi" — squares of contrasting color (side — at least 20 mm), which are arranged in a checkerboard pattern in two rows. The mark is installed on the roof of vehicles or applied to their side surface. In this case, at least five squares must be applied.
This clause directly determines the permissible location for placing the "Taxi" identification mark on a vehicle: either on the roof or on the side surface.
Thus, the correct answer is "On the roof or on the side surface of the vehicle," given that according to the Traffic Rules definition, the "Taxi" mark is installed on the roof or applied to the side surface of the vehicle.
The identification sign "Taxi" is needed so that other road users and passengers can quickly and unmistakably determine that the vehicle is operating as a taxi. That is why the Traffic Rules clearly establish not only the appearance of this sign but also its placement.
Clause 30.3 (n) of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine states that the "Taxi" sign has the appearance of contrasting squares arranged in a checkerboard pattern, and it is allowed to be placed in two ways: either installed on the roof of the car or applied to its side surface. That is, the Rules do not tie the sign to only one specific place but limit it to these two options.
In practice, this means that taxis can mark themselves with a "checker" on the roof (for example, a light panel) or have the appropriate "checkerboard" marking on the sides of the body. In both cases, the sign must be clearly visible to others, which corresponds to the purpose of identification signs.
Therefore, the correct answer is "On the roof or on the side surface of the vehicle," since clause 30.3 (n) of the Traffic Rules directly allows the "Taxi" sign to be installed on the roof or applied to the side surface.
