27.5. Is a U-turn allowed in the technological gaps of the central reservation on a motorway?
UAЧи дозволений розворот у технологічних розривах розділювальної смуги на автомагістралі?
This exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine tests knowledge of traffic safety regulations on high-speed roads, where any unexpected maneuvers are especially dangerous. On a motorway, vehicles move at high speeds, so crossing traffic flows, sudden changes in trajectory, and attempts to 'make a U-turn because it’s convenient' create critical risks of traffic accidents.
In terms of content, it relates to the topic of Traffic Rules regarding driving on motorways and roads for automobiles (the section of the Traffic Rules about special driving conditions on such roads). Clause 27.2 (d) of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine explicitly prohibits making U-turns and entering the technological gaps in the median strip on a motorway. Therefore, any considerations about 'good visibility' or 'absence of obstacles' are irrelevant for the theoretical exam: the rule is categorical.
When explaining the answer options, it is important to understand that any wording allowing a U-turn (in any form) contradicts the direct prohibition in clause 27.2 (d), so such options are incorrect. Technological gaps are mainly intended for service needs and for organizing detours during road works, not for maneuvers in regular traffic. The practical conclusion for a driver preparing for the theoretical exam: on a motorway, U-turns are performed only through designated interchanges and exits, not through gaps in the median strip.
Clause 27.2 (d) of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine
On motorways and roads for automobiles, it is prohibited to: (d) make a U-turn and enter the technological gaps in the median strip.
This provision directly prohibits making a U-turn in the technological gaps of the median strip specifically on motorways, regardless of the presence or absence of obstacles or other conditions.
Therefore, the correct answer is "Prohibited," given that by definition of the Traffic Rules, making a U-turn and entering the technological gaps in the median strip on motorways is directly prohibited by clause 27.2 (d).
Special safety requirements apply on motorways, so any maneuvers that may cause crossing of traffic flows or sudden changes in trajectory are strictly limited. That is why it is important to distinguish what is allowed on regular roads and what is expressly prohibited on motorways.
Clause 27.2 (d) of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine explicitly states that on motorways, U-turns and entry into technological gaps in the median strip are prohibited. That means even if you see a gap in the median, you are not allowed to use it for a U-turn or to enter it as a driver.
Technological gaps on motorways are not intended for regular traffic U-turns, but for service and organizational needs, in particular to provide detours around closed sections during roadworks or for the operation of special services. If drivers start using such places for U-turns, it creates danger due to high speeds, unexpected maneuvers, and the possibility of conflict with other road users.
Therefore, the correct answer is "Prohibited," since the Traffic Rules expressly prohibit U-turns and entry into technological gaps in the median strip on motorways.
