This exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine concerns the safe execution of a maneuver at an uncontrolled intersection, when a right turn is possible from several lanes at once. Such situations often create conflicts between drivers due to a misunderstanding of exactly where one should end up after the turn, so the correct application of traffic rules directly affects safety and the absence of side collisions.

The topic being tested is Passing Intersections and Maneuvering (Section 10 of the Traffic Rules), as well as the ability to read and comply with the requirements of informational and directional signs, in particular sign 5.16 Directions of Movement by Lanes (Section 33). If the organization of traffic by sign 5.16 allows a right turn from the left/center lane, the driver has the right to perform this maneuver and enter the corresponding lane in the same direction. The key condition from paragraph 10.5 of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine is that upon completing the turn, the driver must not end up in the oncoming lane, and must perform the maneuver in a controlled and safe manner.

The analysis of options in the theoretical exam comes down to the correct prioritization of rules: the statement about the need to turn only closer to the right edge is a general rule, but it does not override cases when lane directions are directly defined by a sign or road marking (paragraph 10.4 in conjunction with sign 5.16). Therefore, the option that denies the possibility of turning from the left lane into the second lane is incorrect in this particular traffic organization scheme. Instead, the correct conclusion is that turning into the second lane is permissible if it is allowed by sign 5.16 and the safety requirements of paragraph 10.1 and paragraph 10.5 of the traffic rules are met.

Clause 33.5.16 — 33 "Road Signs", 5 "Informational and Directional Signs", sign 5.16 "Lane Directions"

Sign 5.16 "Lane Directions" indicates the number of lanes at an intersection and the permitted directions of movement for each. If the sign allows a left turn from the far left lane, it also permits a U-turn from that lane. The sign installed before the intersection applies to the entire intersection unless subsequent signs 5.16 or 5.18 "Lane Direction", installed at the intersection, provide other instructions.

Brief application: if sign 5.16 allows a right turn from several lanes, the driver from the "left/center" lane has the right to make a right turn into their corresponding lane upon exit, including the second lane for movement, if this is provided for by the organization of traffic at the intersection (signs/markings) and does not create obstacles.

Clause 10.4

Before turning right or left, including onto the main road, or making a U-turn, the driver must in advance take the appropriate far position on the carriageway designated for movement in that direction, except when turning at an intersection with organized roundabout movement, where the direction is determined by road signs or markings, or movement is possible only in one direction as established by the configuration of the carriageway, road signs, or markings.

Brief application: the general rule is to turn right from the far right position, but the exception applies when lane directions are directly defined by a sign/marking (as in the case with sign 5.16), i.e., a right turn may be permitted not only from the far right lane.

Clause 10.5

The turn must be made so that when exiting the intersection of carriageways, the vehicle does not end up in the oncoming lane, and when turning right, it should move closer to the right edge of the carriageway. Exiting an intersection with organized roundabout movement may be done from any lane, if the direction is not defined by road signs or markings and this does not create obstacles for vehicles moving in the same direction to the right.

Brief application: the maneuver must be completed without entering oncoming lanes; in a situation where sign 5.16 allows a right turn from a "non-right" lane, such a turn into the second lane upon exit is permissible if the requirement for a safe exit from the intersection is met and no obstacles are created.

Clause 10.1

Before starting to move, changing lanes, or making any change in direction, the driver must make sure it is safe and does not create obstacles or danger to other road users.

Brief application: even if permitted by sign 5.16, a driver turning right into the second lane must perform the maneuver safely and without creating obstacles for other vehicles also turning right.

Clause 34.1.7 — 34 "Road Markings", 1 "Horizontal Markings", marking 1.7

Marking 1.7 (a dashed line with short dashes and equal gaps) marks the boundaries of lanes within an intersection; it is permitted to cross it from either side.

Brief application: if the lane boundaries within the intersection are marked with 1.7, movement along one's turning trajectory (including into the "second lane") is possible provided safety and the requirements of section 10 are observed.

Thus, the correct answer is "Correct.", given that according to the Traffic Rules, the lane directions at the intersection are set by sign 5.16, and making the turn into the appropriate lane upon exit is permitted (in compliance with clauses 10.1, 10.4, and 10.5) without creating obstacles and without entering the oncoming lane.

The image shows an uncontrolled intersection where two cars are moving in the same direction and both have signaled a right turn. It is important to pay attention not only to the drivers' intentions but also to the traffic organization approaching the intersection.

Before the intersection, there is an informational direction sign 5.16 "Directions of movement by lanes." This sign determines from which lanes and in which directions movement is permitted at this intersection. If the sign indicates that a right turn is allowed from the left (or middle) lane, then the driver occupying this lane has the right to make a right turn without violating the lane selection requirements.

Next, we assess how the turn itself should be performed. According to clause 10.5 of the Traffic Rules, when turning, the driver must perform the maneuver so that upon leaving the intersection, they do not end up in the oncoming lane, and when turning right, they should generally keep closer to the right edge of the carriageway. In our situation, the turn is made onto a road with two lanes in the same direction, and the car on the left, turning right, enters the second (left) lane of the same direction, without entering the oncoming lane. Thus, the requirement of clause 10.5 is not violated.

In addition, since a right turn is allowed from two lanes (as seen from sign 5.16), it is logical that vehicles can simultaneously make the turn, each into their "own" lane, without creating obstacles for each other. With such traffic organization, a right turn into the second lane in the same direction from the left lane is permissible if it is provided for by the sign and does not lead to a conflict with oncoming traffic.

Therefore, the correct answer is "Correct," since sign 5.16 allows a right turn from this lane, and the requirements of clause 10.5 are met: the car exits the intersection into a lane of the same direction and does not enter the oncoming lane.
