Clause 10.9

Reversing is permitted provided that this maneuver will be safe and will not create obstacles or danger to other road users. If necessary, the driver must seek the assistance of other persons.

Application to the question: reversing with a trailer is a maneuver of increased complexity, so the driver must ensure the safety of the maneuver, particularly taking into account the trajectory of the trailer when turning the steering wheel.

Clause 10.1

Before starting to move, changing lanes, or making any change in direction, the driver must make sure that it will be safe and will not create obstacles or danger to other road users.

Application to the question: when reversing with a trailer, any change in direction (turning the steering wheel) leads to a change in the trajectory of both the vehicle and the trailer, so the driver is obliged to consider that the trailer deviates to the side opposite to the direction of the steering wheel turn and must control the dimensions and direction in advance.

Clause 2.3 (subclause "b")

To ensure road safety, the driver is obliged to: be attentive, monitor the road situation, respond appropriately to its changes, monitor the correct placement and securing of the load, the technical condition of the vehicle, and not be distracted from driving while on the road.

Application to the question: when reversing with a trailer, the driver must constantly monitor changes in the road situation and the trajectory of the trailer (including through mirrors), since the trailer deviates quickly and in the "opposite" direction to the steering wheel.

Clause 1.10 (term "Trailer")

Trailer — a vehicle designed to move coupled with a motor vehicle.

Application to the question: it is the coupling (tow bar) that determines the peculiarity of control when reversing — the trailer changes direction relative to the vehicle differently than when moving forward.

Clause 1.10 (term "Road train")

Road train — a motor vehicle coupled with one or more trailers.

Application to the question: reversing is considered for a road train (vehicle + trailer), where the change in direction is determined by the mutual angle between the tractor and the trailer.

That is, the correct answer is: "When turning the steering wheel to the right, the trailer will start moving to the left," given that according to the definition of the Traffic Rules, reversing must be performed safely, and when driving a road train, the driver must take into account the change in direction of the coupled trailer (which, when moving backward, deviates to the side opposite to the steering wheel turn) and must not create obstacles or danger to other road users.

When reversing, a car with a trailer behaves differently than without a trailer because there is a coupling device (tow bar) between the car and the trailer. When the car moves backward, the coupling point becomes, in a way, the “front” for the trailer: it is the car that “pushes” the trailer, and any turn of the car immediately changes the angle between them.

Imagine you are reversing and turning the steering wheel to the right. The front wheels direct the front of the car to the right, but when moving backward, the rear of the car starts to shift to the left. It is the rear part that pulls the coupling point, and the trailer, reacting to this “push” from the tow bar, begins to deviate in the opposite direction from the steering wheel turn, that is, to the left.

This is clearly seen in a simple example: if you need to “guide” the trailer into a left entrance (for example, into a gate or a parking spot) while reversing, the driver turns the steering wheel to the right. In this case, the car forms the articulation angle so that the trailer starts moving to the left. If you turn the steering wheel to the left, the trailer will go to the right.

Therefore, the correct answer is: "When turning the steering wheel to the right, the trailer will start moving to the left," because when reversing, the trailer deviates in the direction opposite to the steering wheel turn due to the articulation of the car and trailer through the tow bar.
