11. Positioning of Vehicles on the Road
11.1. You are allowed to make a U-turn along trajectory B because:
UAВам дозволений розворот по траєкторії Б, тому що:
Clause 11.8
It is permitted to drive on a tram track in the same direction, located at the same level as the carriageway for non-rail vehicles, provided that this is not prohibited by road signs or road markings, as well as during overtaking or bypassing when the width of the carriageway is insufficient to perform the maneuver without entering the tram track. At an intersection, it is allowed to enter the tram track in the same direction in the same cases, but only if there are no road signs 5.16 "Lane directions", 5.17.1, 5.17.2 "Lane direction", 5.18 "Direction of movement in the lane", 5.19 "Use of the traffic lane" before the intersection. A left turn or U-turn must be made from the tram track in the same direction, located at the same level as the carriageway for non-rail vehicles, unless a different procedure is specified by road signs 5.16 "Lane directions", 5.18 "Direction of movement in the lane" or marking 1.18. In all cases, no obstacles must be created for tram movement.
Application: if the tram tracks in the same direction are located at the same level as the carriageway and there are no signs/markings establishing a different procedure, the U-turn should be performed precisely from these tracks (i.e., along trajectory B).
Clause 10.4
Before turning right, left, or making a U-turn, the driver must in advance take the appropriate extreme position on the carriageway intended for movement in that direction, except when making a turn when entering an intersection with organized roundabout traffic, or when the direction of movement is determined by road signs or road markings.
Application: the general requirement is to perform the maneuver from the appropriate "extreme position". For a U-turn on a road with tram tracks in the same direction, the "extreme position" (in the absence of another procedure) is to move onto the tram tracks in the same direction according to clause 11.8.
Clause 10.6
If a vehicle, due to its dimensions or for other reasons, cannot make a turn or U-turn from the appropriate extreme position, it is allowed to deviate from the requirements of clause 10.4 of these Rules, provided that this does not contradict the requirements of prohibitory or mandatory road signs and road markings and does not create danger or obstacles for other road users.
Application: this is an exception (for example, for oversized vehicles), but in a typical situation, a passenger car must perform the U-turn in the manner specified in clause 11.8.
Clause 1.10 (term "Tram track")
Tram track — an element of the road intended for the movement of rail vehicles (trams).
Application: the question checks the understanding that tram tracks are a separate element of the road, but in certain cases (in particular for U-turns) the Traffic Rules directly require non-rail vehicles to use the tram tracks in the same direction if they are at the same level as the carriageway.
Clause 33.5 — 33 "Road signs", 5 "Information and direction signs", sign 5.16 "Lane directions"
Sign 5.16 "Lane directions" shows the permitted directions of movement for each lane.
Application: if such a sign establishes a different procedure than provided by clause 11.8, then the U-turn is performed according to the sign.
Clause 33.5 — 33 "Road signs", 5 "Information and direction signs", sign 5.18 "Direction of movement in the lane"
Sign 5.18 "Direction of movement in the lane" shows the permitted direction(s) of movement for the lane.
Application: may establish a different procedure for making a left turn/U-turn than is basically provided by clause 11.8.
Clause 34.1 — 34 "Road markings", 1 "Horizontal markings", marking 1.18
Marking 1.18 — arrows on the carriageway indicating the permitted directions of movement for the lanes.
Application: if such marking is present, the procedure for turning/U-turning is determined by it; if absent, the requirement of clause 11.8 to perform the U-turn from the tram tracks in the same direction applies.
That is, the correct answer is "The U-turn must be performed from the tram tracks in the same direction," given that clause 11.8 directly requires making a left turn or U-turn from the tram track in the same direction, located at the same level as the carriageway, unless a different procedure is established by signs or markings.
In this situation, you are planning to make a U-turn on a road where the tram tracks run in the same direction and are at the same level as the roadway. This is important because it is under these conditions that the Rules allow non-rail vehicles to use these tracks to perform certain maneuvers.
Clause 11.8 of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine establishes a special procedure: if the same-direction tram track is at the same level as the roadway and there are no signs or markings that specify a different order of movement, then a left turn or U-turn should be made precisely from this tram track. The logic of the rule is simple: a vehicle preparing for a left maneuver should not unnecessarily occupy the general traffic lanes and create obstacles for other vehicles behind.
The diagram does not show any indicative signs such as "Lane Directions" or corresponding markings that would require making a U-turn from the roadway lane. Therefore, the general requirement of clause 11.8 applies: to make a U-turn, you need to take the same-direction tram tracks and perform the maneuver from there, constantly ensuring that you do not create an obstacle for the tram.
This is why trajectory B is correct: it involves moving onto the same-direction tram tracks before the U-turn and performing the maneuver from the proper position on the road.
Therefore, the correct answer is "The U-turn must be made from the same-direction tram tracks," since according to clause 11.8, when the same-direction tracks are at the same level as the roadway and there are no other instructions by signs or markings, the U-turn is performed precisely from these tracks.
