Question without image

This is an exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine concerning safety when mastering new driving conditions, specifically when a trailer is attached to the vehicle. For the driver, this immediately means different dimensions, a longer vehicle combination, changes in inertia and braking distance, as well as a more complex trajectory during turns and maneuvers. That is why proper preparation before entering general traffic directly affects road safety and reduces the risk of creating obstacles for other road users.

The question tests knowledge of the section of the traffic rules on Training Driving (points 24.1–24 of the Traffic Rules), which establishes the principle that initial driving training should take place on closed grounds or autodromes. In the context of the theoretical exam, this means that the first practical skills with a trailer should be practiced specifically in controlled conditions, without heavy traffic, pedestrians, and unpredictable situations on the road.

The option to start practice on a training ground is logical and normatively justified: there you can calmly practice starting and stopping, turning with consideration that the trailer "cuts" the corner, as well as reversing, which is significantly more difficult with a trailer. The statement that the trailer can be ignored is dangerous, because it is precisely the control of the trailer's dimensions and trajectory that determines the safety of maneuvers. The idea of always driving slowly also does not solve the problem: even at low speed, mistakes during turning, parking, or reversing can lead to hitting an obstacle or the trailer leaving the lane, so the training ground remains the correct starting point.

Clause 24.1 — 24 “Training driving”

Initial training in driving vehicles must be conducted on closed grounds or autodromes.

This clause establishes a basic safety principle: primary development of driving skills (including when the driver is actually mastering vehicle control for the first time in complicated conditions, such as with a trailer) is recommended to be carried out outside of general road traffic — on a training ground/autodrome.

That is, the correct answer is “You should begin practical acquaintance on a training ground,” given that according to the definition in the Traffic Rules, initial driver training must take place on closed grounds or autodromes to practice skills without risk to other road users.

When driving a car with a trailer for the first time, the driver is essentially operating a vehicle with different behavior: the dimensions change, the length increases, and inertia and braking feel different. In real road conditions, this immediately creates an increased risk, as the driver is not yet accustomed to the new size and reactions of the road train, while the Traffic Rules require not to create danger or obstacles for other road users.

A training ground allows you to safely develop basic skills without the pressure of real traffic situations. There, you can calmly practice starting and stopping, acceleration and braking, driving straight, turning, and U-turns, without endangering pedestrians or nearby vehicles. This aligns with the general principle of the Traffic Rules: the driver must operate the vehicle in a way that maintains control and avoids dangerous situations.

A separate reason to start specifically on a training ground is related to maneuvering. During a turn, the trailer follows a different trajectory than the car and usually “cuts” the corner, moving closer to the inner radius of the turn. If this is not taken into account from the beginning, there is a risk of hitting a curb, an obstacle, or the trailer entering an adjacent lane. On the training ground, it is easy to practice leaving enough space when turning and learn to control the dimensions using the mirrors.

It is equally important to practice reversing. With a trailer, it is more difficult because the trailer’s response to steering is different from the usual movement of a car without a trailer, and mistakes happen quickly. On the training ground, you can safely learn to “catch” the trailer’s direction, stop the maneuver, and correct the position without risking contact with other vehicles.

Therefore, the correct answer is “You should start practical training on a training ground,” because it is there that you can safely practice basic maneuvers, control of increased dimensions, and the specific trajectory of the trailer without creating danger for other road users.
