Question without image

This exam question concerns the safe operation of a vehicle during a forced stop, wheel replacement, or minor roadside repairs. Although the Traffic Rules of Ukraine mainly regulate driver behavior while driving, the theoretical exam often also checks basic safety principles that prevent injuries and vehicle damage when using a jack.

The question assesses knowledge in the area of “driver duties and safety,” as well as practical skills related to the technical condition and proper operation of the vehicle within the framework of traffic regulations. The current Traffic Rules of Ukraine do not have a direct provision specifying the exact position for the jack, so the guideline is the manufacturer’s manual: the jack should be placed at the designated jacking points (under the reinforcement rib, frame, or permissible suspension element), which are structurally located as close as possible to the wheel that needs to be lifted.

The option “as close as possible to the wheel” is correct, as this reduces the load arm and makes lifting more stable: there is less risk of tilting, jack slippage, or body deformation. The option “as far as possible from the wheel” increases instability and may lead to the support shifting, while the statement that the position does not matter ignores the requirements for safe jacking and the designated lifting points, which directly contradicts the practical logic of this exam question for the theoretical test.

Traffic Rules of Ukraine — no direct regulation regarding jack installation

The current Traffic Rules of Ukraine do not contain a separate clause specifying exactly where (at which point of the body/frame) the jack should be installed, nor do they establish a requirement to install it "as close as possible to the wheel." Such requirements pertain to the rules for the safe operation of the vehicle and the manufacturer's instructions (jacking points, stiffening ribs, frame, suspension elements, etc.).

Therefore, the correct answer is "As close as possible to the wheel," given that the Traffic Rules do not regulate the place of jack installation, and safe jacking according to the manufacturer's instructions is performed at standard lifting points, which are structurally located as close as possible to the corresponding wheel.

When changing a wheel or lifting the car, the jack must rest on strong elements of the body or chassis that are designed to bear the load. Most cars have special reinforced jacking points or stiffening ribs, usually located at the lower part of the sill. The support part of the jack should be placed exactly at these points.

If there is no special jacking point or it cannot be used, the jack should be placed under another sturdy structural element, such as the frame (for body-on-frame vehicles) or suspension components that are designed to handle such a load. However, the logic for choosing the location remains the same: the lifting point should be as close as possible to the wheel that needs to be raised.

The reason is simple and practical. When the jack is positioned closer to the wheel, the "lever arm" of the load is reduced and the car is lifted more stably: there is less risk of tilting, jack slippage, or body damage. For example, if you are lifting the front left wheel, the correct area will be near the front part of the left sill or another manufacturer-specified point right next to that wheel, not somewhere in the middle of the underbody.

Therefore, the correct answer is "As close as possible to the wheel," since the jack should be placed at the nearest strong lifting point to the required wheel to ensure the vehicle's stability and proper load distribution.
