Question without image

This is an exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine about the safe actions of a two-wheeled vehicle driver when suddenly encountering an obstacle at speed. It emphasizes that the main task of the driver in a dangerous situation is to maintain control and perform a controlled detour or reduce speed, rather than making abrupt, chaotic movements. Such knowledge directly affects road safety, because on a motorcycle or moped, a change of trajectory occurs differently than in a car.

The question checks understanding of the sections of the Traffic Rules regarding speed and maneuvering: choosing a safe speed and controlling the vehicle (item 12.1), actions when danger or an obstacle arises (item 12.3), as well as the requirement to perform any change of direction safely (item 10.1) and to be attentive and respond adequately to the situation (item 2.3). In the context of the theoretical exam, this is essentially a test of the basic principle of controlling a two-wheeled vehicle at speed: to quickly swerve to the left, it is necessary to initiate a lean to the left using the countersteering technique, that is, with a short, confident press on the left handlebar.

The explanation of the answer options boils down to the fact that pressing the left handlebar creates the correct steering impulse for a quick lean and subsequent left turn, so this method is the shortest and most controllable. Pressing the right handlebar, on the contrary, initiates a lean and maneuver in the opposite direction, so it does not achieve the goal of swerving to the left. Shifting body weight to the left without the correct steering impulse is usually too slow and not effective enough for an emergency maneuver at speed, and combining a press to the right with shifting weight to the left results in conflicting actions that reduce precision and control, which directly contradicts the requirements of the traffic rules for safe maneuvering.

Clause 12.3

In the event of a danger to traffic or an obstacle that the driver can objectively detect, they must immediately take measures to reduce speed up to stopping the vehicle or safely bypassing the obstacle for other road users.

Application: the question specifically concerns “bypassing an obstacle” (evasion) as one of the driver’s possible actions in case of danger; for a motorcycle at speed, performing a safe quick bypass to the left is achieved by the technique of countersteering (pressing the left handlebar).

Clause 12.1

When choosing a safe driving speed within the established limits, the driver must take into account the road situation, the characteristics of the cargo being transported, and the condition of the vehicle, in order to be able to constantly control its movement and drive it safely.

Application: the maneuver “at speed” is allowed only if control over the vehicle is maintained; for a motorcycle, a controlled quick move to the left is ensured by proper steering (countersteering).

Clause 10.1

Before starting to move, changing lanes, or making any change in the direction of movement, the driver must make sure that it will be safe and will not create obstacles or danger to other road users.

Application: a quick maneuver to the left is a “change in direction of movement” that must be performed safely; on a motorcycle at speed, the shortest and most controlled way to initiate a turn/bypass to the left is to press the left handlebar (countersteering).

Clause 2.3 (subclause “b”)

To ensure road safety, the driver is obliged to: be attentive, monitor the road situation, respond appropriately to its changes, monitor the correct placement and securing of cargo, the technical condition of the vehicle, and not be distracted from driving while on the road.

Application: “responding appropriately” to a sudden obstacle means performing a controlled (not chaotic) maneuver; on a motorcycle at speed, such a reaction is implemented through countersteering.

That is, the correct answer is “Firmly press the left handlebar,” considering that according to the traffic rules, the driver, when faced with an obstacle, must immediately take measures for a safe bypass and drive at such a speed as to constantly control movement; on a motorcycle, a quick controlled maneuver to the left at speed is performed through countersteering (pressing the left handlebar).

When a motorcycle or moped is moving at speed, it is not possible to quickly change direction in the same way as in a car, simply by “turning the handlebars toward the obstacle.” A two-wheeled vehicle turns primarily due to leaning: to go left, the motorcycle must first lean to the left, and only then will the trajectory begin to shift in the desired direction.

That is why in the event of a sudden obstacle, countersteering is used. Its principle is simple: to quickly lean the motorcycle to the left, the rider briefly and confidently creates a steering impulse through the left handlebar. At the moment of pressing, the front wheel momentarily turns aside, a force arises that “tips” the motorcycle in the required direction, and after this, the vehicle begins to turn left due to the lean. This is the fastest and most controlled way to change trajectory at speed.

For example: if an obstacle appears ahead and there is an opportunity to safely pass it on the left, the rider does not need a smooth turn of the handlebars, but a quick creation of a lean to the left. To do this, he presses the left handlebar; after achieving the required lean, the pressure is reduced, and the motorcycle stably completes the left maneuver.

Therefore, the correct answer is “Firmly press the left handlebar,” since at speed, to make a sharp maneuver, the motorcycle must first be quickly leaned in the desired direction, and the most effective way to do this is countersteering by pressing the appropriate handlebar grip.
