This is an exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine about safe driver behavior in a real road situation, when a vehicle ahead is moving with a dangerous, aggressive driving style. Such drivers often act unpredictably, so the main risk is not "slowness" or "obstruction," but sudden braking, sharp lane changes, and provocations. For the theoretical exam, it is important to understand: safety is achieved not by competing on the road, but by calm, predictable reactions and control of the situation.

The question tests knowledge of the driver's duties and the correct choice of safe speed and distance according to the traffic rules. It primarily concerns Section 2 "Duties and Rights of Drivers" (attentiveness and response to changing conditions, as well as actions in case of danger), Section 12 "Speed of Movement" (choosing a safe speed and immediate reduction down to a stop if necessary), and Section 13 "Distance, Interval, Oncoming Passing" (maintaining a safe distance). The key idea in this topic is: upon noticing a threat, the driver must maintain self-control, reduce speed if necessary, increase reaction time, and carefully monitor the road situation, without creating additional risks.

The option of "overtaking as quickly as possible" often seems tempting, but in practice increases danger: the aggressive driver may suddenly change lanes, accelerate, or "block" the trajectory, creating an emergency situation during the maneuver. The intention to "teach a lesson" with a prolonged horn signal also does not correspond to a safe behavior model: this can provoke conflict and cause the other road user to act even more abruptly. Instead, the correct tactic, which this exam question checks, is consistent with the requirements of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine: be attentive, keep a safe distance, reduce speed up to a stop if there is a threat, and, if possible, avoid contact in a safe and legal way (for example, by changing lanes or route).

Clause 2.3 (b) (driver's duties)

To ensure road safety, the driver is obliged to: be attentive, monitor the traffic situation, respond appropriately to its changes, monitor the correct placement and securing of cargo, the technical condition of the vehicle, and not be distracted from driving while on the road.

This clause checks the requirement of attentive monitoring of the traffic situation, which is key when a driver ahead demonstrates a dangerous (aggressive) driving style.

Clause 2.3 (f) (driver's duties)

To ensure road safety, the driver is obliged: in case of a danger to traffic that he can objectively detect, to take measures to reduce speed up to stopping the vehicle or to safely bypass the obstacle for other road users.

This clause directly justifies the action “reduce speed if necessary (up to stopping)” when another driver's behavior creates a traffic hazard.

Clause 12.1 (Section 12 “Speed of movement”)

When choosing a safe driving speed within the established limits, the driver must take into account the traffic situation, as well as the characteristics of the cargo being transported and the condition of the vehicle, in order to be able to constantly control its movement and drive it safely.

This clause checks that the speed must be safe considering the situation; the appearance of an “aggressive” vehicle ahead is a change in the situation that may require reducing speed to maintain control and safety.

Clause 12.3 (Section 12 “Speed of movement”)

In case of a danger to traffic that the driver can objectively detect, he must immediately take measures to reduce speed up to stopping the vehicle or to safely bypass the obstacle for other road users.

This clause further emphasizes the obligation to immediately reduce speed/be ready to stop in case of dangerous maneuvers by another road user.

Clause 13.1 (Section 13 “Distance, interval, oncoming passing”)

The driver must maintain a safe distance to the vehicle ahead and a safe interval to avoid a collision.

This clause applies specifically to the situation with an aggressive driver ahead: increasing/maintaining a safe distance gives time to react to sudden braking or dangerous lane changes.

Clause 1.5 (Section 1 “General provisions”)

Road users are obliged to know and strictly comply with the requirements of these Rules, be mutually polite, not create danger or obstacles to traffic, and not cause harm by their actions.

This clause supports the correct model of behavior “do not give in to provocations”: act correctly, do not escalate the situation, and do not create additional danger in response to the aggressive actions of another driver.

Therefore, the correct answer is “Remain calm, reduce speed if necessary, and carefully monitor the traffic situation,” considering that according to the Traffic Rules, the driver is obliged to be attentive and monitor the situation (cl. 2.3 (b)), in case of danger — reduce speed up to stopping (cl. 2.3 (f), cl. 12.3), choose a safe speed according to the situation (cl. 12.1), maintain a safe distance (cl. 13.1), and not create additional danger by their actions (cl. 1.5).

When a driver ahead of you is exhibiting aggressive driving behavior (braking sharply, frequently changing lanes, "cutting off" others, or provoking), the main danger for you lies in the unpredictability of their actions. In such a situation, the most important thing is not to "get involved in the game" and not to try to teach the other driver a lesson, as this increases the risk of an accident.

The Traffic Rules require the driver to be attentive, to constantly monitor the road situation, and to respond appropriately to any changes. Aggressive behavior by another road user is exactly such a change in the situation, which requires you to be more focused: you should anticipate possible sudden maneuvers by the vehicle ahead, assess the road surface, the presence of pedestrians, intersections, or exits where the situation may become more complicated.

Practically, this means: keep a sufficient distance to have enough time to react, and do not get too close, even if the driver ahead is acting defiantly. If you see that their actions are creating a risk, it is advisable to reduce your speed to increase the safe interval and to have the ability to stop smoothly in case of sudden braking ahead. For example, if the car ahead suddenly "jumps" between lanes or brakes sharply in front of an obstacle, it is precisely the extra distance and lower speed that will give you the opportunity to avoid a collision without emergency maneuvers.

At the same time, do not provoke a conflict: do not "push" with signals, do not flash your headlights, do not try to catch up or "retaliate" with similar actions. Your task as a driver is to act cautiously and predictably, so as not to add another risk factor on the road.

Therefore, the correct answer is "Remain calm, reduce speed if necessary, and carefully monitor the road situation," because the aggressive behavior of another driver makes the situation unpredictable, and safety is achieved through a calm reaction, increased attention, and, if necessary, reducing speed to create a safe time and distance buffer.
