33.7.7. In which directions is the driver of the passenger car allowed to proceed in the depicted situation?
UAУ якому з напрямків дозволено рух водієві легкового автомобіля в зображеній ситуації?
This exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine tests the driver's attention to road signs and plates, which directly affect the permitted maneuvers at intersections. In real traffic, it is the incorrect interpretation of mandatory signs that often leads to dangerous situations, so in the theoretical exam it is important to be able to read the sign together with all clarifications below it.
The content of the task concerns the rules for passing a T-shaped intersection and the application of road signs from section 33 of the Traffic Rules, in particular the mandatory sign 4.3 "Left turn only" in combination with plate 7.5.1 "Type of vehicle." The key point: the plate determines to which type of vehicle the sign's requirement applies. If plate 7.5.1 with a truck (over 3.5 t) is installed under sign 4.3, then the restriction "left turn only (and U-turn allowed)" is addressed to trucks, not to passenger cars. Therefore, for a passenger car in this situation, the directions are not restricted by this sign, and all available directions of movement become possible.
That is why options where only A or B, or only B are allowed are incorrect: they mistakenly extend the effect of sign 4.3 to a passenger car, ignoring the clarification of plate 7.5.1. The option "B or C" is also incorrect, because without a restriction for a passenger car, there is no reason to prohibit a U-turn if it is technically possible at this intersection of carriageways. The practical value of such a rule is simple: in the exam and on the road, you should always evaluate signs in combination, because a single plate can completely change the range of vehicles for which the requirement applies.
Clause 1.3
Road users are required to know and strictly comply with the requirements of these Rules, as well as to be mutually courteous.
Clause 33.4 — 33 "Road Signs", 4 "Mandatory Signs", sign 4.3 "Left Turn Only"
"Only left turn is allowed. The sign also permits U-turns for vehicles. The sign does not apply to vehicles operating on established routes. The sign applies to the intersection of carriageways before which it is installed."
In this situation, sign 4.3 by itself would limit the directions (only left or U-turn), but its effect is specified by the supplementary plate.
Clause 33.7 — 33 "Road Signs", 7 "Supplementary Plates to Road Signs", plate 7.5.1 "Type of Vehicle"
"Indicates the type of vehicle to which the sign applies."
In the given situation, plate 7.5.1 with the image of a truck means that the requirement of sign 4.3 is addressed to the corresponding type of vehicle (trucks), and not to the passenger car shown in the question.
That is, the correct answer is "In directions A, B, and C.", considering that according to the definition of the Traffic Rules, the effect of sign 4.3 "Left Turn Only" in combination with plate 7.5.1 "Type of Vehicle" applies only to the type of vehicle indicated on the plate (trucks), therefore for the passenger car there are no direction restrictions in this situation.
In this situation, the driver of the passenger car is approaching a T-intersection, before which the mandatory sign 4.3 "Left turn only" is installed. This sign by itself requires the driver to make a left turn, and also allows a U-turn. That is, without additional conditions, it would restrict the directions of movement at the intersection.
However, under the sign there is a plate 7.5.1 "Type of vehicle". According to the Traffic Rules, such a plate specifies which vehicles the sign above it applies to. In this case, it indicates that the requirement of the sign applies to trucks (including those with trailers) with a maximum permitted mass of over 3.5 tons.
Since the question refers specifically to a passenger car, the effect of sign 4.3 in combination with plate 7.5.1 does not apply to it. Therefore, for a passenger car, this sign does not set a mandatory direction of movement at this intersection, and the driver may choose any of the directions allowed by the intersection's configuration.
Thus, the driver of the passenger car may make a U-turn (direction A), turn left (direction B), or continue straight ahead (direction C), since the restriction of the sign applies only to a specific type of vehicle.
Therefore, the correct answer is "In directions A, B, and C," since the "Left turn only" sign with the "Type of vehicle" plate restricts the direction of movement only for trucks over 3.5 tons, and not for passenger cars.
