33.4.11. In which direction are you permitted to proceed in the situation shown?
UAУ якому з напрямків Вам дозволено рух у зображеній ситуації?
This exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine tests the driver's ability to correctly "read" road signs and not to confuse mandatory signs that restrict the direction of movement with those that restrict categories of vehicles. Such tasks are directly related to road safety: misinterpreting a sign when approaching an intersection can lead to choosing the wrong route, dangerous maneuvers, and conflicts with other road users both during the theoretical exam and in real-life situations.
The question belongs to section 33 of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine, group 4 "Mandatory signs," and concerns sign 4.11 "Movement of passenger cars." Its content does not specify where exactly you can go at the intersection (straight, left, right, or U-turn), but determines which vehicles are generally allowed to move on this section: passenger cars, motorcycles, route vehicles, and trucks with a permitted maximum weight of up to 3.5 tons. In a typical "driver's view" illustration, a passenger car is implied, and therefore there are no directional restrictions from the sign itself.
Therefore, options that list only certain directions (A/B/C/D in various combinations) are incorrect: they mistakenly interpret sign 4.11 as one that regulates the direction of movement, although it only restricts the vehicle category. The correct option is the one that allows movement in all shown directions, since for a passenger car this sign does not impose additional prohibitions on the choice of maneuver, and the decision regarding the specific direction is further determined by the general rules for passing intersections, road markings, traffic signals, or the instructions of a traffic controller.
Clause 33.4 — 33 "Road Signs", 4 "Mandatory Signs", sign 4.11 "Movement of Passenger Cars"
Sign 4.11 "Movement of Passenger Cars" allows movement only for passenger cars and motorcycles, as well as route vehicles and trucks with a permitted maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tons. The sign does not apply to vehicles serving citizens or belonging to citizens who live or work in the designated area, as well as to vehicles serving enterprises located in this area. In such cases, vehicles must enter and exit the designated area at the intersection closest to their destination.
Explanation of application: this sign restricts not the direction of movement at the intersection, but the categories of vehicles allowed to move in the designated area/road section. For a passenger car (which falls under the sign), sign 4.11 does not impose any additional restrictions on the choice of direction (straight/left/right/U-turn, if shown in the task).
Clause 1.10 (term "Passenger Car")
Passenger car — a vehicle designed and equipped for carrying passengers, with no more than nine seats including the driver's seat.
Clause 1.10 (term "Route Vehicle")
Route vehicle — a public transport vehicle (bus, minibus, trolleybus, tram) that carries passengers along an established route, according to a schedule, and with designated stops.
Clause 1.10 (term "Permitted Maximum Mass")
Permitted maximum mass — the mass of the equipped vehicle with cargo, driver, and passengers, established by the manufacturer as the maximum allowable.
Therefore, the correct answer is "In any direction.", considering that according to the definition in the Traffic Rules, sign 4.11 "Movement of Passenger Cars" only restricts the types of vehicles allowed to move, and for a passenger car, it does not impose any restrictions on the choice of direction at the intersection.
The image shows the situation from the driver's point of view, meaning the movement of a regular passenger car is implied. In such tasks, if the vehicle is different (for example, a truck), this is usually specified separately in the question.
Before the intersection, sign 4.11 (Section 33 of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine) is installed. Its meaning is that movement in this area is allowed for passenger cars, motorcycles, route vehicles, as well as trucks with a permitted maximum weight of no more than 3.5 tons. That is, for a passenger car, this sign does not impose an entry ban or restrict the directions of movement.
It is important to understand the difference between signs that specifically restrict direction (for example, “straight ahead only,” “right turn prohibited”), and sign 4.11, which determines which categories of vehicles are generally allowed to move in the designated area. Since our passenger car belongs to the permitted categories, the choice of direction is determined by the general rules for passing intersections and by markings/signals, not by this sign.
Therefore, the correct answer is "In any direction," since sign 4.11 does not restrict the direction for a passenger car, but only allows movement for certain categories of vehicles, to which the passenger car belongs.
