This exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine checks not just knowledge of warning signs, but also understanding of the rules for their placement in relation to a dangerous section of road. For road safety, it is important to be able to read the “logic of the sign”: warning signs are meant to give the driver time to react, reduce speed, choose a safe driving mode, and prepare for a maneuver before the danger begins.

In the theoretical exam, this question belongs to section 33 “Road Signs” (warning signs) and is related to exceptions from the standard rule for placement distance. Usually, warning signs are placed in advance: in populated areas 50–100 m, outside them 150–300 m before the dangerous section (and a different distance is specified by plate 7.1.1 “Distance to the object”). At the same time, the Traffic Rules directly provide for a special case for signs 1.6 “Steep Ascent” and 1.7 “Steep Descent”: when ascents and descents are located one after another, they are allowed to be installed directly before the start of the corresponding section, so that the sign does not end up “in the middle” of the previous descent/ascent.

If you compare the options, the signs warning about a railway crossing (with or without a barrier), “Pedestrian Crossing,” and “Cyclists Crossing” serve precisely as advance warnings and by regulation are installed in advance at the standard distance, not “right next to” the danger. In contrast, the “Steep Ascent” sign has a special provision in the traffic rules allowing it to be installed directly before the dangerous section, so in this task, it is the correct answer. In practice, this means: upon seeing such a sign before a series of ascents/descents, the driver must immediately adjust their driving tactics, taking into account the conditions of the mountainous section and the requirements of the relevant sections of the Traffic Rules.

Clause 8.4 (a) — 8 "Traffic Regulation", 8.4 "Road Signs"

Warning road signs inform drivers about approaching a dangerous section of the road and the nature of the danger.

Brief application: the question tests understanding that warning signs are usually placed in advance of the danger, but for some of them the Traffic Rules provide an exception regarding the placement (directly before the section).

Clause 33.1.6 — 33 "Road Signs", 1 "Warning Signs", sign 1.6 "Steep Ascent"

"Sign 1.6 'Steep Ascent' warns of an approaching ascent where the requirements of section 28 of these Rules apply, and is installed outside populated areas at a distance of 150–300 m, in populated areas — at a distance of 50–100 m before the start of the dangerous section. If necessary, the sign may be installed at another distance, which is indicated on plate 7.1.1 'Distance to the Object'. The sign is installed directly before the start of ascents or descents located one after another. If the ascent section cannot be seen along its entire length or its length exceeds 0.5 km, then plate 7.2.1 'Zone of Action' is used together with the sign."

Brief application: this norm contains a direct rule-exception — sign 1.6 may be installed directly before the dangerous section (when ascents/descents are located one after another).

Clause 33.1.7 — 33 "Road Signs", 1 "Warning Signs", sign 1.7 "Steep Descent"

Signs 1.6 "Steep Ascent" and 1.7 "Steep Descent" are installed directly before the start of ascents or descents located one after another.

Brief application: this clause is added because the question tests knowledge of the exception specifically for the pair of signs 1.6/1.7 (option 1.6 is shown in the answer choices).

Clause 33.1.27 — 33 "Road Signs", 1 "Warning Signs", sign 1.27 "Railway Crossing with Barrier"

"Sign 1.27 'Railway Crossing with Barrier' is installed outside populated areas at a distance of 150–300 m, in populated areas — at a distance of 50–100 m before the start of the dangerous section. If necessary, the sign may be installed at another distance, which is indicated on plate 7.1.1 'Distance to the Object'. Outside populated areas, the sign is repeated. The next sign is installed at a distance of at least 50 m before the start of the dangerous section."

Brief application: this clause shows the general approach — the sign is placed in advance, not "right up against" the dangerous place (and is additionally repeated outside populated areas).

Clause 33.1.28 — 33 "Road Signs", 1 "Warning Signs", sign 1.28 "Railway Crossing without Barrier"

"Sign 1.28 'Railway Crossing without Barrier' is installed outside populated areas at a distance of 150–300 m, in populated areas — at a distance of 50–100 m before the start of the dangerous section. If necessary, the sign may be installed at another distance, which is indicated on plate 7.1.1 'Distance to the Object'. Outside populated areas, the sign is repeated. The next sign is installed at a distance of at least 50 m before the start of the dangerous section."

Brief application: similar to 1.27, the Traffic Rules require advance placement, not directly before the danger.

Clause 33.1.34 — 33 "Road Signs", 1 "Warning Signs", sign 1.34 "Cyclists' Exit"

"Sign 1.34 'Cyclists' Exit' is installed before a section of road where cyclists may appear, or at a place where the road crosses a cycle path outside an intersection. The sign is installed outside populated areas at a distance of 150–300 m, in populated areas — at a distance of 50–100 m before the start of the dangerous section. If necessary, the sign may be installed at another distance, which is indicated on plate 7.1.1 'Distance to the Object'."

Brief application: this tests differentiation — this sign is a warning sign and is placed in advance (standard distances), without a special "directly before" rule as for 1.6/1.7.

Clause 33.1.32 — 33 "Road Signs", 1 "Warning Signs", sign 1.32 "Pedestrian Crossing"

"Sign 1.32 'Pedestrian Crossing' informs about approaching an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing, marked by appropriate road signs or road markings. The sign is installed outside populated areas at a distance of 150–300 m, in populated areas — at a distance of 50–100 m before the start of the dangerous section. If necessary, the sign may be installed at another distance, which is indicated on plate 7.1.1 'Distance to the Object'."

Brief application: this is also an "advance" warning sign; the start of the crossing itself is marked by other means (signs/markings), not by sign 1.32 "right up against" the crossing.

Clause 33.7.1.1 — 33 "Road Signs", 7 "Plates to Road Signs", plate 7.1.1 "Distance to the Object"

Plate 7.1.1 "Distance to the Object" is used to indicate the distance from the place where the road sign is installed to the start of the dangerous section or to the object the sign warns about.

Brief application: the question indirectly tests knowledge that a "different distance" for warning signs is set by this plate, but this is not identical to the "directly before" rule, which is explicitly provided for 1.6/1.7 in defined conditions.

That is, the correct answer is "Sign 1.", given that according to the definition of the Traffic Rules, sign 1.6 "Steep Ascent" (as well as 1.7) may be installed directly before the start of a dangerous section in the case where ascents/descents are located one after another.

In this question, the important point is not which sign indicates "danger," but rather where it is permitted to be installed. All the depicted signs are warning signs, meaning they inform the driver in advance about a dangerous section and its nature. Usually, such signs are installed ahead of time: in populated areas at a distance of 50–100 m, and outside populated areas at 150–300 m before the start of the dangerous section.

Signs related to a railway crossing (with or without a barrier), "Pedestrian crossing," and "Cyclists crossing" serve specifically as advance warnings. That is, their standard installation location is before the dangerous section at a specified distance, not directly "up close" to it. If necessary, the distance can be different, but in that case, it is separately indicated by a "Distance to object" plate, and in any case, the logic of these signs is to warn in advance.

The exception in this scenario is signs 1.6 "Steep ascent" and 1.7 "Steep descent" (section 33 of the Traffic Rules). For them, a special placement option is specifically provided: when ascents and descents follow one another, the sign may be installed directly before the start of the respective ascent or descent. This is done for situations where the standard "warning" distance would be illogical (for example, if the sign for the next ascent would have to be placed in the middle of the previous descent).

Therefore, the correct answer is "Sign 1," since it is the "Steep ascent" sign that, according to the Traffic Rules, may be installed directly before the dangerous section when ascents/descents are located one after another.
