This exam question from the Traffic Rules of Ukraine tests the ability to safely pass uncontrolled intersections, where the order of movement is determined not by a traffic light or a traffic controller, but by priority road signs. Such situations are among the most common both in the city and outside it, and correctly determining “main/secondary” directly affects safety: a mistake forces other drivers to brake or change their trajectory, which directly contradicts the requirement to “give way.”

In terms of content, this question belongs to section 16 of the Traffic Rules (Passing Intersections) and checks the application of points 16.11 and 16.14 in combination with priority signs 2.1 “Give Way” and plate 7.8 “Direction of the Main Road.” The logic is as follows: if you approach under sign 2.1, you are on the secondary road and must yield to all vehicles approaching on the main road, regardless of their further direction (p. 16.11). And since the main road changes direction on the diagram (as shown by plate 7.8), drivers on the main road among themselves, as well as drivers on secondary roads, pass according to the rules of “equal” intersections (p. 16.14), that is, without “priority” between secondary directions solely due to the signs.

That is why the correct answer is the option where you must yield only to vehicles on the main road: they have priority, and you must not create an obstacle for them. The option “yield to everyone” is incorrect, because a car that is also approaching from a secondary road does not get priority over you just by the fact of approaching the intersection. The option “yield only to the grey one” is also incorrect: sign 2.1 requires you to yield to everyone moving on the main road, not selectively to just one of them. Understanding this scheme directly helps both in the theoretical exam and in real traffic to quickly “read” the intersection and avoid trajectory conflicts.

Clause 16.1

Intersections where the order of passage is determined by traffic light signals or a traffic controller are regulated. Other intersections are unregulated.

Application: in this scenario, the order of movement is determined by priority signs, so the intersection is unregulated and the rules of Section 16 for unregulated intersections apply.

Clause 16.11

At an intersection of roads of unequal importance, the driver of a vehicle moving on a secondary road must give way to vehicles approaching this intersection along the main road, regardless of their further direction of movement.

Application: our vehicle is on a secondary road (sign 2.1), so we are obliged to yield to all vehicles on the main road (in this scenario — the red and gray vehicles).

Clause 16.14

If the main road at the intersection changes direction, drivers of vehicles moving along it must follow the rules for passing intersections of roads of equal importance with respect to each other. This rule also applies to drivers moving along secondary roads with respect to each other.

Application: since the direction of the main road at the intersection changes (as indicated by plate 7.8), drivers on the main road with respect to each other, and drivers on the secondary roads with respect to each other, must proceed as at intersections of equal roads (by reference to clause 16.12). This explains why, after yielding to vehicles on the main road, the mutual order between "us—white" is determined by the "give way to the right" rule, not by the fact that one of them is "on the main road."

Clause 16.12

At an intersection of roads of equal importance, the driver of a non-rail vehicle must give way to vehicles approaching from the right, except at intersections where a roundabout is organized.

Application: between our vehicle and the white vehicle (both are on the secondary road), the "give way to the right" rule applies, so we are not obliged to yield to the white vehicle (on the contrary, the white vehicle must yield to us, as we are to its right).

Clause 1.10 (term "Give way (do not create an obstacle)")

Give way (do not create an obstacle) — a requirement for a road user not to continue or resume movement, or perform any maneuver, if this may force other road users who have priority to change their direction or speed.

Application: in this scenario, "give way" means not to start crossing the intersection in such a way that would force vehicles on the main road (red and gray) to change speed/direction.

Clause 1.10 (term "Main road")

Main road — a paved road in relation to an unpaved one, or one designated by road signs 2.3 "Main road", 2.1 "Give way", 2.2 "No entry without stopping", and 2.4 "End of main road".

Application: the "main/secondary" status in this scenario is determined by priority signs; vehicles on the main road have priority over those approaching from the secondary road.

Clause 33.2 — 33 "Road signs", 2 "Priority signs", sign 2.1 "Give way"

Sign 2.1 "Give way" — the driver must give way to vehicles moving on the main road.

Application: this sign is installed before our direction, so we are on the secondary road and must yield to vehicles moving on the main road (red and gray).

Clause 33.2 — 33 "Road signs", 2 "Priority signs", sign 2.3 "Main road"

Sign 2.3 "Main road" — grants the right of priority passage at unregulated intersections.

Application: vehicles moving along the road designated as the main road have priority over those entering from the secondary road.

Clause 33.7 — 33 "Road signs", 7 "Plates to road signs", plate 7.8 "Direction of the main road"

Plate 7.8 "Direction of the main road" — indicates the direction of the main road at the intersection. Used with signs 2.1 "Give way", 2.2 "No entry without stopping", 2.3 "Main road".

Application: the plate determines which directions at the intersection are main (and that the main road changes direction), so we must yield specifically to those moving on the main road (red and gray), not the white vehicle, which is also on the secondary road.

Thus, the correct answer is "Give way only to the red and gray vehicles," considering that according to the definition of the Traffic Rules, we are approaching from the secondary road (sign 2.1), and priority is given to vehicles moving on the main road, the direction of which is indicated by plate 7.8; mutual order on the secondary road is determined by the "give way to the right" rule (clause 16.12 via clause 16.14).

Approaching this intersection, the first thing to determine is how the right of way is established here. There is no traffic light or traffic controller, but there are priority signs, so the intersection is unregulated, and the order of passage is determined by the main and secondary roads.

From our direction, sign 2.1 "Yield" with plate 7.8 "Direction of the main road" is installed. This means we are on a secondary road, and the main road at the intersection changes direction as indicated on the plate. Therefore, vehicles traveling on the main road (in this situation, the red and gray cars) have priority over us.

Next, we apply clause 16.11 of the Traffic Rules: a driver moving on a secondary road must yield to vehicles approaching on the main road, regardless of where they are going next. Thus, we must yield to both the red and gray cars, because they are traveling on the main road.

The white car is also approaching from the secondary road, meaning it does not have priority over us "by main road status." After the vehicles on the main road have passed, the relationships between vehicles on the main road and those on the secondary road are determined by the rules for roads of equal status according to clause 16.14 of the Traffic Rules. In our case with the white car, this means that it must yield to us, since we are to its right.

Therefore, the correct answer is "Yield only to the red and gray cars," since we are moving on a secondary road under the "Yield" sign and according to clause 16.11 must yield to vehicles on the main road, while the white car is also on the secondary road and does not have priority over us.
